Preview for Skybound/Image’s new prequel comic series, Summoners War

by admin

Spawned from the smash hit mobile fantasy game, Summoners War, Skybound/Image Comics is teaming up with game publisher Com2uS in September to deliver Summoners War: Legacy, a brand-new comic book title set in the same realm as the worldwide phenomenon which has garnered over 100 million downloads — and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive preview of this magical prequel series.

Penned by celebrated writer Justin Jordan (Reaver, Dead Body Road) and accompanied by inspired pencilwork from artist Luca Claretti (Adventure Time Comics), Summoners War: Legacy expands the franchise’s wide creative footprint into fresh storytelling territory. Joining the rousing project are colorist Giovanna Niro (Star Trek: Nero) and letterer Deron Bennett: (Excellence, Assassin Nation).

Summoners War: Legacy’s tale unspools 35 years prior to the universe-shattering clash at the mobile game’s thrilling core. This new comic series showcases a menagerie of fan-favorite monsters, explores more of the fate of Durand’s parents, and dives deeper into the rich lore of the vast mystical land of Alea and its colorful cast of engaging characters including Abuus, Rai, and Tomas, all while drawing new connections to upcoming Summoners War games and the Summoners War: Sky Arena.

“Alea, the world Summoners War takes place in, is a huge world full of different races, nations, magical and technology,” Jordan tells SYFY WIRE. “So, you’ve got a place that’s very literally made for adventure, which makes my job a lot easier and a lot more fun. The monsters are so cool. But I am also a big fan of the overall aesthetic in how technology and magic are integrated, which has been interesting to build into the story.”

The supernatural adventure follows Rai Holder and Tomas Dredger, a young Summoner and a young Proto, as they attempt to transport a dangerous artifact across Alea with no clue who to trust and no resources except their own skills and wits.

“And for fans of the game, that Dredger last name should sound familiar, since this is also the story of how Durand Dredger’s parents met and how he ended up with the Wind Griffon Bernard,” Jordan adds. “Luca had actually been someone I wanted to work with before the series, so I jumped on bringing him onto this. Luca and Giovanna have been perfect for getting the tone and feel just right. I was aiming, more or less, for an Avatar: The Last Airbender feel for this, and they’ve nailed that and elevated it.”
